Own boat tuition / training and commissioning of a new Lagoon 46 catamaran “SY Reality” on the River Hamble, Solent and Jurassic Coast of England March 2022 for Mr Gary Brown.

Mr Gary Brown, a self made business man, who started with less than nothing has had a 45 year dream to travel the world on a own sailing yacht. His life time dream is now becoming a “Reality”, hence the name of his new Lagoon 46 catamaran.

Gary an accomplished SCUDA a diver, is no stranger to the water. Over the years he has extensively dived the SW Coast of England and made many diving trips to the Red Sea in Egypt. He has skippered many a rib to reach numerous dive spots.

As part of his plan to one day sail the world he completed his RYA Competent Crew and Day Skipper course in 1995 in the Solent UK. Then in 2020 spent a week in the BVIs Caribbean with Sunsail and RYA instructor Tony Clark requalifying his RYA Day Skipper Certificate.

Gary’s parting words to Tony after requalifying for his Day Skipper License in the BVIs was to standby because he would need Tony’s services again for his very own boat tuition, training and commissioning prior to his next steps to sail the world. That become a “Reality” and in late 2021 Gary called Tony to tell him the new boat had been purchased, the delivery date was to be March 2022 in Southampton UK and he would require Tony’s services. Hence on Saturday 20th March 2022 Gary and Tony began their 10 day owner boat training and commissioning on SY Reality.

Own Yacht Sail Training

Whilst there are many RYA Training centres around the world offering shared and private boat Day Skipper practical courses on school boats the day skipper syllabus does have it’s limitations.

The Day Skipper practical syllabus is quite broad and packs an awful content into a 5 day course, providing very little time to hone your skills in any one area.

The requirements of 5 days, 120Nm and 4 night hours on a sailing yacht with up to 4 other students will rarely be enough time to make a competent yachtsperson. The volume of content delivered in a short amount of time will make it very difficult for any student to understand let alone master any of the practical exercises. The day skipper practical certificate is really provides us an introduction to the things we need to understand to become proficient at yachting. Hopefully what the course will do for the majority of us, is show us how much more there is to know and how much more tuition and practice we need to become proficient at boat handling and the fundamentals of sailing the yacht safely.

There are three possible ways to become proficient;

1. Learn from our own mistakes,
2. Learn from other non professional peoples’ mistakes or
3. Learn from the culmination of many years of learning from a large community of professional instructors.

Learning from our own mistakes could potentially be costly in more than one way, both in terms of having to replace broken equipment or even worse the cost of hurting or even worse killing someone. Learning from other peoples’ mistakes, does not guarantee that their solution is the best way to avoid the mistake. Learning from the culmination of a large community of learnings and teachings means engaging a professional instructor who has been taught through a proven formal training program. The Royal Yachting Association RYA YachtMaster Training scheme has long been considered the very best practical yachting training program in the world. To be an RYA / MCA YachtMaster Instructor is considered to be the highest level of practical sailing / yacht handling instructor in the world.
